She Is Four

Four years, baby girl.

Four blessed years of curly hair, smiles, giggles,

 pink and princess-y things,

 intelligence, fun, games,

\
and always the nightly ritual of "rock and sing".

You astonish us with your ideas,
your maturity,
your thirst for knowledge,
your blossoming faith.

We can't imagine life without our beautiful gift from God.

We love you.

Happy 4th Birthday!

Charissa Goes to SCAT

Every week a group of lovely ladies from the Sunlight Basin and Crandal area (about 20 minutes away) meet for SCAT, Sunlight Crandal Artistic Teadrinkers.  During the winter, they usually meet for a meal and then knit or sew while visiting.  This summer, since the weather has been so glorious, individual ladies have graciously hosted different outings ranging from picnics to trap shooting.  Today was hosted by Susan at the Elk Creek Ranch.  Their summer riding program had a gymkhana and we came to watch.  Susan kindly allowed Charissa to join in the fun and let me tell you, that little girl thought she'd died and gone to heaven!

After meeting a pretty new friend and eating a delicious lunch we went on a long walk.

It was beautiful and full of wildflowers.
Look at that face, will you?  Where does that come from?

She enjoyed blowing cottonwood fluff into the face of her wonderful friend, Sheri, while everyone else watched barrel racing.

Then she let her dolly "Charlotte" play in the sprinkler.
(Charlotte's mommy got pretty soaked herself!)

And she went swinging in the amazing hammock.

This young horse could not figure out what that little human was up to.

"What is that strange thing over there???"

While watching the barrel horses Charissa kept telling me that someday she would ride a horse and it would run and run.  Well, this sweet boy, Charro, didn't run and run but he was certainly a gentleman and granted the wish of a very excited, if slightly hesitant, little girl.  Oh thank you, Susan, for letting her!

A lifelong memory has been made :-)
Maybe someday she'll be at Elk Creek Ranch for a whole summer...

...and then her horse can run and run!

Cozy

I had organized all her toys into three nice bins.
She emptied every single one of her toys out of their bins and into an enormous heap in the middle of her room.
She nearly caused her father to break his leg when he ran in the room to pick up her brother from his nap.
She said, "Why you scream, Mama?" when I stepped on them later.  Ouch.
She pitched a huge fit when I told her to pick up her toys.

But then I'm looking through my camera
and see the picture Doug took of her that day.
And it makes the mess worth it.

Just the Kids

I know that a certain Nana has recently been experiencing some serious grandbaby withdrawals and I have a feeling she's not alone.  I told the kids about this so they decided to tell you a bit about the past few days.  Enjoy!

Hi.  Dis is Charissa tawking to you.  A foo days ago (Saturday) we hiked up and up and up to dis pwace cawd "Cwazy Cweek".  It was willy, willy pwetty and der were WOTS of fwowers and I picked wots of dem.

My fav-wit pawt was when I dot to throw wots of sticks into dah water.

Brandt here.  Yeah, Crazy Creek was pretty cool.  I gotta ride on Mama's back in this suh-weet backpack thing.  Everyone thinks I'm just "so cute" in it and all.

I liked the water and how cold it was when we stood next to it but my favorite part?  We had a picnic, man.  And picnic means FOOD.  I'm all about the food.

Dis is Charissa.  Yestaday?  Daddy had to go and work at dah church in dah morning?  Mama wet us watch a MO-vie while she went and dot weddy for church!  It kept her nice and quiet for twenty minutes and dat was nice 'cause she can be willy noisy.

Yeah, Brandt again.  Later on Sunday we drove for like, ETERNITY (Mom said it was only around 2 hours but I think she meant 2 YEARS) through this place called Yellowstone and we saw buffalo and bears and elk 'n stuff.  We got out and hiked near Lake Yellowstone.

My favorite part was when we went to this gym at the big resort there for a worship service.  This group of people from a place called Taiwan thought I was the best thing on earth and made me run and laugh and kept picking me up and kissing my cheeks.  That gym had some rocking acoustics, man!

I wuved to see aw dah buffalo and we saw dis bear but I wooked through dis wong "telescope" thingy and it wooked wike a willy little bear so I asked if I could see a big bear.  Mama said dah bear would be wots bigga if it was closer to me.  I called Wake Yewwostone "dah Ocean" and I dot to wun and wun awound.

Taday is cawd dah 4th of Ju-why.  We went and dah Firemen made us yummy food.  I wiked dah cupcakes dah best!

After I ate dah cupcake awe up, I went and played bean bag toss wif Daddy and I was willy good betaws I wearned jus how to do it!  Evwyone else twies to frow dem from so far away, dah siwwy-willys!

I was WILLY good at it!

Brandt again.  Yeah, the 4th and all, I liked it.  I sat on a lady's lap while Mom and Dad ate and she fed me pickles.  They are awesome, man!  Then I ate this cookie and it kept falling on the ground so it got properly seasoned with like, dirt and all which is my favorite way to eat anything.  I was studying Charissa's bean bag strategy pretty carefully so I can cream her next year.

So when we got home?  I walked from the suburban all the way to the house and only fell once!  I'm pretty amazing!

Wehww, dis is Charissa again.  We better go and take our naps so we can go eat hambuwgers and watch dah fireworks.  A man towd Daddy dat they are WILLY WILLY woud out here taws of dah "echos" fwum dah mountains.  I won't be scared betaws I will be awwwwww snuggly as a bug in my bwanket on Mama's wap!  Good-night my wittle muffins!

 Love,
Charissa and Brandt

We will miss da pond

Charissa has been in a very weepy mood most of the afternoon.

"Mama I want you to hold me and rock me."

We sit in the glider chair and sing for a while.

"Charissa, why are you so sad?
Is it because we are moving?"

"Yeah, it's betaws when we get in da caw and dwive and dwive...

 "...we will go to Coworado..."

"...and den we will nevah, evah..."

 "...see da pond evah agin."

"I will miss da pond, Mama."

And then we cried together.

Looky!

Charissa the artist has expanded her magnadoodle doodling to people!
This is a self-portrait:

I'm so happy to see her artistic skills improve.
I'm waiting for "The Picture Smile" to improve soon.

Brandt keeps standing up but he's kind of shy about it.
Being the crafty, sleuthing individual I am, it has finally been documented!

Playing the recorder is another favorite pastime.

It's so fun to watch them grow up!

We Are Shehwees

We made a tent in the living room,
pretending we were "Shehwees" (???)
"ate" surprise candies & gum from a toy dish,
and whispered about being Shehwees.
According to the expert,
Shehwees play dress up and dance.
So that's what we did,
spinning, jumping, clapping,
and falling down when we got dizzy.
Shehwees are eventually tired
and have to get ready for bed.
But before Shehwees can sleep,
they must have a story read,
back scratched,
songs sung while being cradled and rocked.
Whispered prayers,
soft kisses,
big squeeze hugs.
We love being Shehwees.

"Check It Out, Woop, Woop!"

Don't ask me because I really don't know.  She was making a crown from a kit and started saying this phrase complete with bizarre facial expression :-)  Enjoy!

Celebrating Everyday!

Recently, I've started explaining the meaning of Easter to Charissa, that it is a time when we remember the death of Jesus on the cross for our sins and then celebrate His conquering our death through the Resurrection!  Somehow she has become confused and thinks we are celebrating Christmas again.  It's about Jesus, too, right?  She will ask every morning if it's Christmas yet, has started singing Christmas songs and even "makes" and "decorates" Christmas trees.  This morning she put on Brandt's snowsuit (um...a tad short maybe?) and started singing "Angel's We Have Heard On High".

Christ's birth, life, death and resurrection is something to celebrate everyday!  But I'm pretty sure wearing a snowsuit year-round isn't quite the way I'll do it...

Choices and Toddlers

If you are a parent of a toddler, you've probably read or been told or heard it on the radio or watched it on tv that during the "terrible twos" (or threes, or fours....) you should give your child choices in their daily life which will "empower them" and consequently lessen tantrums and such.  It will teach them to make decisions for themselves in daily life.  It helps life skills!

Here is an example of decision making in life:

Doug: "Where do you want to eat?"
Me: "I don't know."
Doug: "There is Mexican, Italian, Seafood, Chinese..."
Me: "Um...I don't know."
Doug: "What do you feel like eating?  Any cravings?"
Me: "Um, nope.  I don't know.  You decide."
Doug: "Okay, decide between Mexican or Italian.  Which do you want?"

Now, since he narrowed it down, I can usually go through the process of "we ate Mexican last week, so let's try Italian."  Sometimes.  But other times, I just want to eat.  And I don't really care.  And what would you like?  Really, which would YOU prefer, my dearest other half?  This is not me being sacrificial.  This is me really asking you to tell me where I'm going to eat.  I'll be happier.  I'll be safer.  I'll be empowered by your love for me.

And for goodness sake, we'll get to eat faster since my mind obviously isn't working.

Well, I am the parent of a toddler and I don't know if it is because she is a female toddler or because she is an occasionally grouchy/hungry/sleepy/the-gravitational-pull-of-the-moon-removed-her-normally-cheerful-self toddler, but offering her these choices often results in a far bigger hullabaloo than I really want to figure out how to deal with.

Some good friends reminded me today that when giving a toddler choices, only give two choices - her little brain will become boggled otherwise.

Fur instance:

*Me thinking* "Okay, Mexican, Italian, Seafood, Chinese...?  I guess that makes all others an option as well?  Is he saying fast food, too?  What about a steak house?  Good grief, what about the Wal-Mart deli??"

Likewise, sometimes Charissa can't decide and instead of telling me "Which would you like, Mom?"  This is usually what happens:

Me: "Do you want your flower boots or Croc-ees?"
Charissa: "Umm...Cwoc-ees."
Me: "Okay!  We'll wear the croc-ees today." *begins putting them on*
Charissa: "NO!  I want my FOWER BOOTS!"
Me: "But you just said you wanted your crocs!  Okay, you want to wear your boots?"
Charissa: "YEAH!" *angered voice"
Me: "Okay, fine.  We'll wear boots." *looks at clock* "Alrighty!  We're all ready!  Let's go."
Charissa: *kicks off boots and begins to exhale rapidly through her nose* (this means trouble)
Me: "What's wrong????"  *sigh - looking at clock*
Charissa: "I wanna wear my CROC-EES!"
Me: "But you just said...!!!"

And so it goes.  By the time we're finally out the door I'm irritated and Charissa is in tears and for pity's sake - what just happened??  Is she schizophrenic???

No.  She's just (almost) three.  And sometimes (a lot of the time), she needs guidance.

So I've decided, choices are okay - some of the time.  But if it's looking like that choice might take a very involved hour and we don't have an hour or she's really just power playing (recall, dropping the spoon off the high chair?  Yes?  Same thing) or she's grouchy/hungry/sleepy/the-gravitational-pull-of-the-moon-removed-her-normally-cheerful-self, then her first choice stands.  The Crocs it is - period.  Even though it occasionally results in carrying a kicking, screaming toddler to the car under one arm and the crocs in the other hand.  (That has never happened to you, right?)

But sometimes, I don't even give her a choice.  She's wearing her boots outside.  It's muddy and I'm not washing her shoes.  If the child psychiatrist would like to come wash her shoes and jeans, be my guest.  But until then, she's wearing boots.  Or, she's sitting on the time-out chair thinking about obeying and wearing boots.  Sometimes, these choices are far more important concerning her safety ("No, you may not walk on the icy pond.") and her health (Yes, you are going to eat you dinner before ice cream.")

I guess I could just say "I'm the Mama that's why!" but it goes deeper than that.  She's (almost) three.  She isn't about to go and buy a home or move to Europe.  She hasn't even mastered going to the potty unassisted.  I don't expect that of her.  Until she does become the beautiful, strong-willed, independent lady that I know she will be, I'm the authority figure.  Not her buddy, not her maid, not her person that makes brownies and let's her eat the batter with a spoon...

Well, I guess I might fall into those categories, too.

I am her mother.  God gave her to me not just so I can boss her around (or for her to boss me around) but for me to help guide her in making decisions and sometimes, that means making them for her or teaching her to stick to her word.

I pray that I am a leader she respects and loves.  Even more, I pray that she will know God in that same way and see that He's my leader, too.  It's a tall order as a parent.  In fact, it's impossible on my own.  Thankfully, I'm not on my own :-)

Someday when she is on her own and buying a home or moving to Europe, I pray she will know Who to ask for help.  That she will know that she is never just on her own.  She will have choices, but I pray she will seek answers from Someone far wiser than me.

"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God,
who gives generously to all without reproach,
and it will be given him."
James 1:5

"See Mama?  Day match!"

(Sometimes when I don't even give her a choice, she surprises me.
She even accessorizes.  And that she did NOT learn from her dear, 'ol Mom!)

Perhaps...

...it's time to re-install the child safety locks on our cabinets.  I say re-install because every single one has been broken by *ahem* ME while trying to access things in said cabinets and yanking them really hard.

I was always surprised at the resistance.
Even after a year of their presence, I would yank.  Hard.
The flimsy plastic locks finally just gave up.
That weird adult-child was to strong for them.

Brandt has discovered the joys of removing everything out of the cabinet and hurling them around the kitchen.  It makes such a fabulous noise.

 There is such an attraction.

He has such a dedication of purpose.

I can't help but admire it.

"Yeah!  I ROCK!"

So I cleaned it all up and not one second later...

"Heh heh, she stacked them up just for ME!"

"Helloooo!!"

His sister is, of course, behaving perfectly in the living room.
See her beautiful pink nails?

 Wha...?

 Hum.  Maybe not so perfectly...

Maybe they know I'm the one that broke the security locks.

Can't I get a little respect around here?
